Whether you like arts and culture, the beauty of nature, peace and quiet or an active holiday – you’ll find it all on Orø.

Orøstrand Mini-zoo

This small zoo has over 400 animals and birds representing approximately 50 different species. You will see red deer, ostrich, llama, crocodile, coati, ferret, marmoset and tropical birds. You will also find a six meter long tiger python, the largest in Denmark!

KulturBeholderen & KulturParken

In honour of the Queen’s visit to the island in 2013, the old water tower on Margrethe Bakken was restored, and thereafter decorated by local artist Steen B. Langvad. The walls illustrate the history of Orø in a beautiful series of paintings. In KulturParken you will find changing exhibitions with art within sculptures in iron, stone, wood and wicker. Take a rest on the benches while you enjoy the exhibition and nature.

Galleri ArtDoor

Visit artist Steen B. Langvad’s gallery, where he exhibits his oil paintings, illustrations and sculptures in Corten steel. Take a look at the outdoor gallery and in the adjacent building, which houses an enticing range of island specialties.

Hegneskoven

Experience the beautiful forest at Hegnegården and at the same time get some exercise at the beautiful natural tools that stand around along the path system. They are also a hit with the kids!

Orø Minder

This cozy little museum houses exhibits and an extensive collection of written material on Orø’s history. Also exhibited is a copy of “Orøkorset”, an 11th century gold cross found on the island considered to be one of the most treasured Danish gold pieces from the past.

Orø kirke

Dating from the 1100’s, Orø church is the island’s oldest building. Its fine frescos had since the Reformation been hidden behind layers of whitewash. However in 2001 they, as well as the ribbed vaults, were restored to their original state.

Hestebedgård

Visit this ancestral farmhouse, now a museum. The house and gardens provide the setting for a number of cultural events.

Smag Orø – Visit a Beekeeper

Look for the sign “Åben Bihave” at the garden gate on the Højvejen 4. Here beekeeper Hans Jakob Arli Sørensen  can give you an enlightening experience with the possibility of tasting the delicate natural product that is produced here.

Fjordlandet Studio

Visit the workshop of the artist Martin Bruggisser. Here Martin creates his works in granite, stoneware, paper, wood, linoleum, and makes masks and wind harps. Prior agreement is required to visit the gallery.

KunstPåOrø

KunstPåOrø is an association of artists on Orø, many of which have their own workshops and galleries that are open by appointment. The association also counts a handful of music and theater artists.

Orø Veteranlandbrug

This small intimate privately owned agricultural museum houses objects dating back to the 1920s. See opening hours at the webiste. For groups of 8 and more, an appointment can be made on other days.

Stensbjerg

If you want a 360 degree panoramic view and a beautiful overview of Orø, then visit Stensbjerg also known as Margrethebakken. The hill, which is Orø’s highest point, is located behind Orø Kro and is easily accessible to everyone.
